Protolabs MFG Day

On Manufacturing Day (Oct. 6), we will be holding an event for the grand opening of Protolabs’ metal 3D printing facility located in Morrisville. As customers of Protolabs located in the Raleigh area, we would like to invite you to come out and see the new facility firsthand. We are inviting both area students and customers who would like to hear from Protolabs 3DP experts and tour the new facility focused on Direct Metal Laser Sintering. The below advisory has additional details on the event, and I am happy to answer any questions you may have.

If you are interested in attending, please RSVP with Kenny Capps.

Direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) is an industrial metal 3D printing process that builds fully functional metal prototypes and production parts in 7 days or less. A range of metals produce final parts that can be used for end-use applications within industries like aerospace and automotive driving increased demand. Join us on Manufacturing Day (Oct. 6) for the grand opening of Protolabs’ new DMLS facility to learn about this industry leading innovation changing how we develop new products.

Friday, Oct. 6 – Manufacturing Day with Protolabs:

  • 9 a.m. – As leaders of one of the largest 3D printing services in the nation, Kenny Capps, director of 3DP manufacturing operations, and Eric Utley, 3DP applications engineering manager, will discuss 3D printing’s emergence for prototyping and end-use production parts.
  • 10 a.m. – Tour of both the new DMLS facility, as well as our existing facility where our remaining 3DP technologies are held.
  • 11 a.m. – Final Q&A/Interview opportunities with Protolabs 3DP leaders

Metal 3D printing technology is commonly used for:

  • Prototyping in production-grade materials
  • Complex geometries
  • Functional, end-use parts
  • Reducing metal components in an assembly

Facility by the numbers:

  • 120,000 square feet
    • 60,000 sq ft devoted to DMLS 3D printing
  • 32+ printers with total capacity of 91
  • 75+ employees dedicated to DMLS operations
  • Production capacity: 80-100K parts monthly (12-15K unique parts monthly)

Benefits of new facility:

  • Overall space to grow as demand and applications for metal 3DP expand.
  • Metal 3DP-specific building design allowing for clear material delineation and segmentation
  • On-site machine shop with comprehensive secondary machining capabilities
  • Future addition of an expanded metrology unit

DMLS printers:

  • GE Additive X Line 2000R Large Format Printer (Max part size: 31.5 in. x 15.7 in. x 19.7 in)
  • GE Additive Mlab
  • GE Additive M2
  • GE Additive Mlab 200R
